SPACEFOLDS 6

SPACE-ROCK (PSYCH)

This is cheap, but not because it’s poor or substandard music - far from it in fact! It’s cheap because it comes in the most basic packaging, but it's the music that counts-and how!  ‘Spacefolds 6’ eclipses the splendid heights reached by its predecessor ‘5’, with seventy-three minutes of instrumental music that takes the space-rock/psych genre into new dimensions. The eight-minute opener launches things in suitably strong fashion, with swirling synths, searing slide guitar, vast washes of string synths and a chugging rhythm section that drives the whole thing forward. A massive slice of melodic, powerful space-rock unfolds, with guitar work and synths climbing higher and higher, with sound quality that’s absolutely perfect and delivery that’s spot on, so much so that you wish it would continue on for even longer! But, when you hit track 2, you breathe a sigh of relief to find that it is actually doing just that, as the feel, sound and drive of the opener is held for another full-sounding slice of atmospheric space-rock, this time with the bass a little more prominent, with some neat space synth touches, but the mood chills out at the half way point. Gorgeous early 70’s Hawkwind style synth touches swoop and soar round the central framework, while chiming guitar leads, echoed guitar and resonant bass combine to create a section of genuine rhythm-free space-rock that would not have sounded out of place on any of the early Hawkwind albums – Superb! With 6 more tracks, three of which are over eleven minutes long, the whole feel, sound and delivery remains at the same consistently high levels, making this one of our favourite instrumental cosmic-rock CD’s, and at the asking price, it’s a total steal!

CLUSTER (MELODIC PSYCH GUITAR INSTRUMENTAL TRIO)

ACID ROCK INST. (PSYCH)

Slugging it out in the red corner we have, Nebula Trip, and in the blue corner, the challenger, Serotonin. The bell sounds for round one and Serotonin get straight in there with melodic lead guitar work, weaving and bobbing, but with a flowing action, preferring to use well-produced subtlety against any onslaught that may come from the champion, and occasionally stepping up the action to give some chunky punches before toning down to a suitably restrained defence. Round two, and the challenger starts off with some nimble footwork, before a quick burst of blows reigns down from the guitar, then suddenly the challenger goes into action with a constant stream of chords and riffs, stepping up the power and catching the champion off-guard, with strong blows and thunderous backup punches. Enough! it’s a superb CD from a new trio that takes the world of psych guitar jamming up a notch by creating truly spectacular music that isn’t really reminiscent of anyone, but at the same time, is wholly familiar and instantly accessible. The trio shine as an ensemble, but the electric guitar is the star, as all manner of riffs, rhythms, solos, melodies, chords and notes rain down like a meteor shower, ably driven on by a tight and fluid rhythm section. From power to restraint, this is one of those albums (a bit like straightforward Grateful Dead jams or bits of Ozrics/Cro without the synthesizers) that is suitable to play on almost any occasion.

EXPLODE INTO SPACE:INHALATIONS 1998-2000

STYLE/LINK:HAWKWIND

The second volume of the story that previously started out as the ‘In Space We Trust’ album, and now continues as a further audio document of the various band line-ups since that CD was released, but it’s still not yet the official brand new studio album! So, what is it, then? It’s all previously unreleased music from a line-up of synths, guitar, bass, drums and vocals, with similar and better sound quality than the previous release. Turn it up loud and you’ll hear bass-led thunderous space-rock and some superb space-evoking electronics as the Spacehead sound becomes more defined, much of it dominated by the awesome electric bass work of Mr Dibs, who also handles the vocals and takes much of the writing credits. A couple of the tracks are quite long with space for some strong and sturdy electric bass and electric guitar work, complete with strong drumming and swooping synth backdrops, while several others are short and snappy affairs that roar through your head. A few are segued to create an uninterrupted flow within the cohesive, often explosive music, and the instrumentals feature the synthesizers more prominently, but they are always in a band context. This album flows beautifully, and with the main accent being on power and dynamics, some tracks will really blow you away. The fact that sometimes the bass is used as a lead instrument, almost relegating the guitar to a more rhythmic oriented role, will initially sound a mite strange, but stick with it, because this is becoming a quite potent brew of space-rock, in which Spacehead have their own imprint firmly and squarely implanted. So overall, in its own way, this album is a more than worthy, consistently varied, powerful and atmospheric follow-up to the well received, and now deleted, ‘In Space We Trust’ album. It is seriously fine space-rock, so it’s time to add it to your psych-rock collection and get into Spacehead now!

NEW WORLDS BY DESIGN (GONG-P.TREE-CAN MEMBERS AO)

SPACE-ROCK (PSYCH)

A successful super-group project masterminded by musician Don Falcone, who created the work by playing musical phrases and ideas onto a DAT tape, gave that tape to another musician, who added their part, and then he passed that on to someone else to add their bit, and so on, until he eventually they created an album with a list of participants that could hardly be more impressive! This stellar line-up of 17 superb tracks offers seventy-seven minutes of cohesive, flowing music, delivered to absolute perfection. Stylistically, it covers a wide amount of mostly instrumental ground, from space-rock, with nods toward prog, Krautrock, wild prog-fusion and chilled-out acid rock - virtually everything to make up a truly classy album that will have a massively wide appeal. Almost all the tracks possess a huge, solid sound, and a production that places them firmly in the more jamming side of space-rock. The whole thing is full to the brim with original ideas, inspired playing and superb execution, with editing, production and sound second to none. This is a consistent, enjoyable, brilliantly assembled and produced album that really does sound like each musician was present in the studio when the tracks were conceived.

RETURN TO EARTH (CDR-ESSENTIAL FOR HAWKWIND FANS)

CLASSIC SPACE-ROCK (PSYCH)

The duo of Captain Black (a musician who has performed on stage with Hawkwind) and current Bedouin vocalist Danny Faulkner team up for this 11 track space-rock project. Right from the opening salvo of synths, guitars, electric bass and drums that take up the main riff from ‘Brainstorm’, you feel that you might just be on to a winner - but, as the track drives on in a mesmerising hail of samples and spiralling synth space whooshes, you’re certain of the fact! - This is top class semi-instrumental space-rock of the highest calibre! Faulkner’s voice is also tailor-made for the space-rock genre - all lightly echoed and soaring in the grand traditions of early and classic Hawkwind. Throughout all of this steaming cauldron of epic space-rock, the sound quality and production are top notch, but the arrangements, playing, layers, riffs, rhythms and solos are pure class and obviously heavily Hawkwind-influenced, but with the band’s own sense of originality firmly in place. This is a class act, with an album that has been as well received by our psych customers as any we can think of in recent times - A mind-blowing gem if ever there was one!

PARANOID LANDSCAPE

SPACE-ROCK (PSYCH)

Immense! Co-produced by Helios Creed, this is an instrumental psychedelic/space/Kraut masterpiece that will blow your head clean off! You’ve only got to hear the absolutely MASSIVE fuzz bass that towers over the opening track, complete with drums, more bass, fuzzed guitars, synth backdrops and phased effects, to realise that you’re dealing with an album that inhabits a whole new musical universe when it comes to Kraut-rock influenced space-rock. There’s very little like it around, that’s for sure, and this opener sets the scene for an amazing album to follow - an album full of driving instrumentals that exhibit a multi-layered cauldron of sound, revolving around the guitars, electric bass, drums and synths, but way more powerful than say, something like Can, more aggressive than Hawkwind and more intense than Escapade. The compositions just burn from start to finish and the effect is almost industrially heavy in many places. Simply awesome stuff, and one CD that I recently haven’t tired of repeat playing, so it definitely gets ten out of ten in my book – a monster of an album!

SAD SONGS, BETTER DAYS

STONER ROCK (PSYCH)

A stoner trio, so you know what to expect, right! Spot on, for once – killer riffs, monstrous bass, solid drums and hollered vocals, with some wicked early Sabbath guitar soloing along the way. The pace of songs varies from mid-fast and the songs themselves are the usual fayre, but delivered as hot as you’d hope - heavy but not overpowering (for stoner rock, that is). There’s even a hidden track – but a bit of a throwaway so don’t get too excited. All in all, recommended.
