KINGS OF OBLIVION (REMASTERED/4 BONUS TRACKS)

JAMMING ROCK (PSYCH)

This remastered re-issue of the classic 3rd Fairies album has 4 bonus tracks, including the much sought after single versions of ‘Hold On’ and ‘Well, Well, Well’ and previously unreleased mixes of ‘City Kids’ and ‘Well, Well, Well’. For this album, guitarist of old Paul Rudolph was replaced by soon-to-be Motorhead guitarist Larry Wallis, and here they began the approach to a more rock based and slightly less psychedelic style, although with the trademark Fairies riffing and song-writing prowess still firmly intact. Starting with the anthemic classic: ‘City Kids’, the set moves through a host of slower and more urgent slices of psych-rock, and the guitar work is right out front, with riffs and solos assailing the listener to perfection as the band play a dynamic blinder. With the 4 bonus tracks included, the sound given a complete overhaul and the enhanced packaging with new sleeve notes by Mark Powell, it’s even more of an essential purchase than it was.

NEVER NEVER LAND (REMASTERED/5 BONUS TRACKS)

JAMMING ROCK (PSYCH)

A remastered version of the classic first album by the Fairies from 1971! It is regarded by many as one of the quintessential psychedelic rock albums of all time! This was the only studio album from the original quartet that included Twink, and in its newly remastered form, it still sounds every bit the classic that it has been labelled all these years ago. Predating practically every form of modern psychedelic and stoner rock by miles, this CD actually ‘sounds’ incredibly ‘now’ when you listen to the remastered version - If you didn’t know the album, and someone told you it was recorded relatively recently, you probably wouldn’t argue with them! However, ‘song’ wise; right from the opening strains of the classic ‘Do It’ with its trademark foggy riffing from guitarist Paul Rudolph, right through the trippy 'Heavenly Man’ and 'War Girl’, to the soon-to-be concert favourite ‘Uncle Harry’s Last Freak Out’, every track is so of its time that you can almost smell the joss sticks burning! This re-issue has 5 bonus tracks including single versions of ‘The Snake’ and ‘Do It’ and a previously unreleased version of the truly smoking, twelve-minute, alternate studio version of ‘Uncle Harry’ that totally blows the album version out the water, and THAT was hot to start with! The presence of the all-time Fairies classic single: ‘The Snake’ as the 4th bonus track, is also a long awaited and welcome addition to this ‘real’ album. Original copies of the pink-coloured vinyl LP now change hands for a staggering £350!

WHAT A BUNCH OF SWEETIES (REMASTERED/5 BONUS TRKS)

JAMMING ROCK (PSYCH)

The classic 2nd album from the Fairies has also been digitally remastered, and 5 bonus tracks have been added, including the previously unreleased songs ‘Going Down’ and ‘Paul Nr. 37’ plus alternative versions of 3 of the album’s tracks. Released by Polydor In July 1972, ‘What A Bunch Of Sweeties’ is by far the bands’ best album, mixing favourites from their live sets with the hilarious stoned-humour of cartoonist Gilbert Shelton, author of ‘The Fabulous Funny Freak Brothers’ comics and ‘Pigs Of Uranus', the closing track on side one of the original vinyl LP. This long-awaited re-issue sums up everything that made the Fairies so special. The combination of psychedelic and stoned rock all neatly tied together in one sizzling, yet commercial package, with songs, short and long, will have you coming back for more time and time again. From the opening minute of typically Fairies humour that introduces the red hot riff opening the seminal ‘Right On, Fight n’, you are hooked to the guitar attack that prefaced stoner rock by decades. This album stands up as one of the top five psychedelic rock albums of all time, and the remastering process has kept all the psych qualities firmly intact while at the same time creating a more expansive sound for your listening pleasure. The 5 bonus tracks plus enhanced packaging and sleeve notes merely add to what was already an incendiary album.

REFLECTIONS IN A RADIO SHOWER

SPACE-ROCK (PSYCH)

If the first one was a runaway success supergroup project, this one is, if anything, even better! To fill you in on how this, and the other Spirits Burning album came about - The idea was that Don Falcone, the mastermind musician behind the project, played musical phrases and ideas onto a DAT tape, then gave that tape to another musician, who in turn added his part, and then he passed that on to someone else and so on – and lo! – The tracks were created. The fished product here is a seamless, classy and 200% quality album – A masterpiece of creation that will give hours of satisfying listening for years to come. It eclipses the first one (and THAT was a gem) and can quite easily be said to be genuinely an essential purchase for a wide variety of music fans across an equally large stylistic range. Just like the ‘New Worlds By Design’ album, this is consistent, enjoyable, brilliantly assembled, produced and thought out, and it honestly sounds as if each individual musician was present in the studio when each track was conceived. It just doesn’t come any better than this!

NUNAVUT (2 X CDR-CARD COVER)

SPACE-ROCK (PSYCH)

A double CD of jams and improvisations from one of the leading psych-Krautrock style bands in the USA right now! This one has been a while in coming, for if any band deserves to show that they can really mix influence with adventure, it’s this lot. This stack of tracks comes across with the same feel, and to an extent, the sound of Can at their most intense, particularly ‘live’. All previously unreleased studio tracks; the material here has all the hallmarks of the 70’s Kraut-Rock influences, but with more complexity and more daring. The interactions between guitars, bass, drums and keyboards are sizzling at one end and positively inspired the other, as tracks ranging from two to over eighteen minutes reveal; a band who can really deliver. With a band such as Circle all the rage right now, you would do yourself a favour to have a go at this lot - You just might like what you hear!

INSOMNIAC (SUPERB SINGLE IN UNIQUE MINI PACKAGING)

STYLE/LINK:HAWKWIND

OK – wait a minute – Listen – you cannot afford to pass this one up... there are so many reasons you need this CD... After the phenomenal success of the first album, and a long wait, we now have a new offering that clearly illustrates this is going to be the year Starfield achieve recognition in a big way - and we’re right in there at the start of it. What you have here is a one-track CD single that is packaged in a way you simply won’t have seen before, and quite frankly, you will be amazed when you cast you eyes on this little fella!  So that’s the first big plus point, but the second is even better… buying this single gets you a voucher that entitles you to £1 off the brand new album when it comes out, meaning you are effectively getting this for just £1.99. Then we get to the band, specifically the fact that, for Hawkwind fans, we’re talking Captain Black & Richard Chadwick, but also the equally vital inclusion of Danny Falkner & Dillar. Then finally, and here’s the clincher, the music... The best track Porcupine Tree never recorded! This is phenomenal – there’s no other word to describe it – you’ll hear a perfect, near six minutes of vocals, guitars, Mellotron, drums and synths that simply ooze classic Porcupine Tree/Pink Floyd from every pore, but with an added bite to the guitars plus some fantastic lead and harmony vocals – it’s the sort of track you will want to play again and again and again, in the house, in the car, in the office – anywhere and everywhere – yes, it really is THAT good. It’s a limited edition, so stake your claim by ordering your copy now.

SCIENTIFIC (ESSENTIAL FOR OZRICS/MQB/HILLAGE FANS)

STYLE/LINK:OZRIC TENTACLES

OK, this is an EP - Yes it is only twenty-four minutes long - Yes it is a decent price, but before you look away – Yes, it is an absolutely essential purchase! Now, I have heard so many people say that they are into the style of instrumental acid-rock as practiced by the likes of the Ozric Tenticles, Mr. Quimby’s Beard and Tribe Of Cro, and that maybe that is enough. However, there is no way that you can argue with something of quality when it comes along - something that’s so utterly mind-blowing, incredibly special and amazingly well produced and played as this. Tidal Flood have got the whole instrumental Space-Acid Rock genre off to perfection, with outstanding writing abilities and a delivery that is positively spectacular in its execution. The guitar work stands out as exemplary, cutting through with solos, riffs and rhythms that would make Ed Ozric jealous, while the space and lead synths swoop, float, soar and dive, above a driving rhythm section that is crisp tight and solid - one of the finest you’ll hear. If you are an Ozrics/MQB fan, you simply have to own this EP – It really is THAT essential - Quite simply, it’s everything you could want in this area of music and stands head and shoulders above most others, as something that is destined to be an out and out classic. Stunning - I have lost count of the number of times I’ve played it now!
