STYLE/LINK:HAWKWIND

At long last, this is the follow-up to the excellent ‘Detonator’ LP from years ago, care of our hero Crum, most notable for doing synth duties on stage with Hawkwind on their ’95 and ’97 UK/European tours, as well as appearing on the Hawkwind albums ‘In Your Area’ and ‘Live ‘97’ (the fan-club only CD). Anyway, as you might expect, this is no ordinary album – it’s synth-dominated, yet predominantly space-rock, complete with drums, bass and samples, but sounding like one mighty amalgam of all sorts of musical ideas that you may have glimpsed at in the past echelons of bands such as Hawkwind, Gong, Tribe Of Cro, Melting Euphoria and beyond. It’s all performed, played and arranged with a degree of originality, and the quality in all departments is first class. It is almost entirely instrumental and the ‘space’ theme is present throughout all ten compositions, all of which are varied, yet similarly connected enough to give a flow from start to finish. Those who enjoy the instrumental works of Alan Davey or the more ambient, atmospheric parts of the played ‘Psychedelic Warriors’ LP, will get a real buzz out of this CD, as will many Hawkwind fans and those who enjoyed the groups’ previous CD.  There’s more to this than first appears, so take time to let it sink into your soul.

DEFINITIVE UNSOLVED MYSTERIES OF...

ACID ROCK INST. (PSYCH)

It’s an almost completely instrumental album and the first 'proper' release in a long time for arguably what is becoming one of the UK's leading psychedelic bands. Unlike the Ozrics, Tribe Of Cro and similar bands, this lot present things from a slightly different and more rewarding angle. Instead of fusing 70’s acid rock with dub and Eastern influences 'a la Ozrics', or trying the more unusual angular approach of Cro, or even tackling old style Gong head-on into Melting Euphoria elements, this band take a more direct route to Hawkwind, Pink Floyd & ‘Fish Rising’-era Steve Hillage. It is one sizzling album with everything a psych fan could want - swathes of ‘Wish You Were Here’ style synths, soaring solos that recall Gilmour, Hillage & Brock, surging space-rock, Blake-style synth swoops & solid rhythmic undercurrents, even managing to do their own answer to the coda to Floyd's 'Saucerful Of Secrets' and making it work to perfection. Every track is a certifiable gem, and the sixty-three minutes pass by so quickly that all you want to do at the end is play it all over again!

SPACELINES (OZRICS SPACEY SYNTH OFF-SHOOT)

STYLE/LINK:OZRIC TENTACLES

The ambient offshoot of Ozric Tentacles that only ever recorded two cassette-only albums that were distributed by very few people (although one was us). So, for the first time on CD (excluding a rare track on the now deleted Planet Dog compilation), here are Ed and Joie on analogue synths and samplers with the best tracks from the two cassette albums. All the tracks have been remastered, some of which are previously unreleased ‘live’ versions and two cuts are brand new pieces recorded especially for the project. Musically, the CD crosses a wide variety of riches, on synth based music that has a wide set of roots, going from the days of Zorch and Tim Blake right up to the ambient music pioneers that came to deserved prominence in the early 90’s. From rhythmic and powerful to chill-out and spacey/spacious, this is really the acceptable face of psychedelic synth music, with a crossover appeal to Synth, Psych, Ambient and even Progressive music fans, with some stirring melodies, superb spiralling layers, a great sense of texture and dynamics, rolling rhythms, sequencers and a feel that is just so warm and emotive, yet solid and dynamic throughout. More varied and consistent than you’d think, this is one serious quality release that has become a firm favourite among many fans across all the aforementioned musical genres and musicians.

MANDIES & MESCALINE (BBC SESSIONS)

JAMMING ROCK (PSYCH)

Call yourself a Fairies fan? Well, if you don’t have this then I’d think about that again, because, in line with he first three albums, this is a classic set of vintage tracks that you simply can’t live without. First the good news... Thirty-five minutes of this CD features the BBC ‘Top Gear’ and ‘In Concert’ sessions, including a twenty-minute version of 'Uncle Harry' that has to rate as one of the best ever versions of this psychedelic jamming classic. Not only that but this version is by a line-up of the band that existed only on this recording, notably the stable trio of Rudolph-Hunter-Sanderson joined by a second lead guitarist whose name escapes me, and to hear a dual guitar attack rendition of this psych-rock classic track, is a total treat that takes you such a high, that takes ages to come down from. Being BBC recordings, the quality is superb, and the performances too are totally awesome – In fact the whole thing is just amazing!  Next, the even better news... the other twenty-five minutes of this CD features the 2 tracks from the ‘Glastonbury Fayre’ album. At this price too, you just have to own this album.

REVENGE IS EASY

STONER ROCK (PSYCH)

I suppose you’d have to bracket this as ‘Stoner’ rock, with its huge fuzzed bass, pounding drums, gravel-voiced vocals and lead guitar that cuts through like a gleaming long-bladed knife! Track after track of scorching acid-tripped rock leaps out on to the airwaves and almost assaults you with its ferocity, without being fast-paced, but just well heavy, and a bit like being pummeled by a slow-motion jackhammer. The songs themselves are nothing outstanding, but they do have a charm that endears them to anyone who thinks that ‘Stoner’ rock is manna from heaven, or thinks that first album-era Blue Cheer remains one of the finest bands on the planet today. Heavy, hard and rocking, this is one album that I can well imagine possessing more of a ‘listen-to-me’ appeal the more you give it a chance – Why, some of those lead guitar lines and solos are straight out of the early Budgie handbook, so I definitely think it deserves another couple of plays, and I will do just that. A good, solid album that just might be a great one after two or three plays!
