SPACED COLLECTION

CLASSIC (PSYCH)

A seventy-six minute sampler of MMB music, complete with 2 new tracks that are exclusive to a CD that showcases the vocal and instrumental sides of the band, with tracks ranging from psychedelic space-trance through Gong-flavoured instrumentals and interludes, to a more relaxed, slightly jazzy Ozric Tentacles style. The vocal tracks are generally quite harmonious and multi-tracked, with a great sense of urgent indie commerciality, while the instrumentals are more serious, less superficial, and tend to work better. Overall though, this certainly is an accurate representation of much of the Mushroom’s work, and a very useful place to start for the potential fan.

BEYOND THE MAYBE MACHINE

ACID ROCK INST. (PSYCH)

Now this is wonderful! Largely abandoning the Ozrics rock style of the previous album; they have come up with what can rightly be regarded as the ultimate space/acid-rock chill-out album ever to hit the streets! Viewed as a continuous sixty-eight minutes of music, this is a stunning instrumental album that has influences from Gong (particularly), Ozric Tentacles and Hawkwind, but rather than being 'in your face' rock this concentrates much more on flow and dynamics, and I can imagine it being the perfect album to curl up to with your favourite substances! With healthy doses of synthesizers, electric guitars, bass & drums, the passages range from reflective to powerful, but the overall effect is one of classic psych-rock on a completely new level, although in a way it remains familiar sounding throughout. A superb album!

INSIDE THE GARDENS OF THE MIND

ACID ROCK INST. (PSYCH)

From the moment you hear the crashing drums, the undulating upfront electric bass, the mile high synth swoops and whooshes of the opening track, you know you are in the presence of some seriously excellent instrumental acid / psych / space-rock. Then it gets hotter, with the bass and synths sharing dual lead duties for the first time, above a crashing and strong drums backing. Then, at just the three-minute mark, an electric guitar lead surges in and guitars solo and spiral out of sight to utterly breathtaking effect, leaving you totally hooked and utterly amazed! It's all a bit like the Ozric Tentacles, or a bit like Tribe Of Cro, but ultimately it’s their own unique style that emerges as this album plays on with one hell of a dense sound that has so much going on in the mix it’s not true! Every one of these instrumental tracks has a unique style, and it is music that’s firmly up there with the best this genre has to offer. The production is first rate and the sound is crystal clear, but it’s the acres of fuzz, phased, electric and acoustic guitars allied to the classic space-rock synth backdrops & lead lines that makes this the band’s very best album to date.

SHE WANTS TO TAKE US...OVER THE EDGE OF THE WORLD

ACID ROCK INST. (PSYCH)

The ghosts of early-mid 70’s Gong, ‘Fish Rising’-era Steve Hillage and 90’s Ozric Tentacles are never far away on this cracking set of tracks, as the electric guitars and keyboard soar high in the sky, with electric bass and drums weaving a tight rhythmic web all around to keep the free flying leads in check. Continuing their tradition of instrumental psychedelia, Gong-rock and acid rock, it is remarkable how, quite independently of the Ozrics, this band’s career is also maturing in terms of the feel, emotion and overall playing. Their compositions cover a full dynamic range, but generally soar and burn, and their sensational soaring sounds fly across the musical horizon, leaving a smoking sonic vapour trail in their wake, whilst coming across as much more structured and less like jams than ever before. Anyone into this area of music or any of the aforementioned bands can’t fail to be moved by the sheer class and quality of the compositions and their delivery. It would be unfair to single out any one track, as it’s one of those rare albums where you feel the need to sit down and listen to the whole lot in one sitting. Every track is red hot, with production and full-sounding arrangements that are just superb. So, if you think that the Ozrics have still got it, wait until you hear this lot, and prepare to be blown away – It’s superb stuff.... Sheer magic in fact, and proof (if any is needed) that there’s still a lot more to come from this style of music – Ten out of ten and no mistake - bet they’re incredible live too!

UPON THE SOLAR WINDS (INSTRUMENTAL OZRICS-GONG)

ACID ROCK INST. (PSYCH)

A predominantly instrumental album, and apart from some female 'oohing' and 'aahing' in places, it is founded on a musical context similar to the early Ozrics, and it really works well with its thickly textured synthesizer base over which soaring electric guitar and even more synths materialise, very reminiscent of the swooping effects so used by early Hawkwind, Gong and the present day Ozrics, all ably supported by a rhythm section that complements the surging and spacier moments perfectly. The accent is firmly on dynamic power, variation of pace and mood rather than bombastic overkill, and I would strongly advise you that if you get off on some of the 'You' line-up of Gong's extended work-outs, or early Ozrics without the Eastern flavour, then this is for you. It really is a sensational CD, packed with tons of perfectly balanced synths and guitars, all flying high and showcasing everything that makes the genre of instrumental space-rock so classic. Essential, believe me!

DREAM NEBULA-BEST OF NEKTAR 1971-1975 (2CD)

CLASSIC SPACE-ROCK (PSYCH)

Spot on! Who ever compiled this double album as a 'Best Of' got it absolutely perfect, as you get over one hundred minutes of prime classic Nektar. Taken from the vintage era, the selection of sc-fi-/space-rock cuts delivers music and songs that show just how brilliant this band was, and, to a degree, how underestimated their role in producing music that crossed the borders of the Psych, Space, Euro and Prog styles, has become. You get all of the title track off the ‘Tab In The Ocean’ album, the first half of ‘Remember The Future’, a selection of the very best tracks from the immaculate ‘Journey To The Centre Of The Eye’, even a good track from ‘Down To Earth’, only a very small, but very good portion of the overrated ‘Sounds Like This’ LP, and a biting set of tracks from their ‘Recycled’ album. The quality is superb, although it doesn't actually say it's been remastered, but it sure as hell sounds fantastic! Generous helpings of instrumental space stuff from synths, organs, electric guitars and effects are on show, with the rhythm section doing all that's required and vocals that fit perfectly into it all. For fans and new beginners, this is the essential Nektar album and no mistake!
