YOUNG EFFECTUAL

CLASSIC (PSYCH)

If you can imagine a cross between (wait for it).....Hawkwind, The Beatles, King Black Acid, Pursuit Of Happiness, Maximum Indifference & Shadow Gallery, you’re coming close to the immense delights of this solid rock album. It’s all of these styles and more, with a huge production that takes the synths, guitars, bass, drums and vocals across an expanse of galactic proportions, as the sound just pours out of the speakers. Largely taken at a pace that defines TPOH/KBA more than Hawkwind, the Beatle/ELO-esque harmonies adding to the sheer incredulity of the construction, every song is a grower that will have you inexorably hooked after just three plays. It’s not strictly prog or space-rock or psychedelic or rock or pop, just a magical and magnificent hybrid of all these styles and possibly destined to be one of the best ‘forgotten’ classics of the first decade of the new millennium, so – do me a favour – make sure that doesn’t happen, spoil yourself, and get this album – it’s the business and then some!

OPEN SEASON (OLDER TRACK COLLECTION+2 NEW TRACKS)

JAMMING ROCK (PSYCH)

This is non-EMI period material, featuring Hawkwind violinist Simon House and a guest appearance by Adrian Shaw. The CD lasts a staggering seventy-nine minutes, with a set of instrumental and vocal tracks that include the massive twenty-five minute instrumental slice of psychedelic rock that is ‘Turn Yourself Down’ track, with Hill’s electric guitar & House’s violin really soloing & duelling to perfection over a crunching rhythm section - as fine an example of seventies psych rock as you’ll find!  Elsewhere, there are tracks that remind you of the excellent Mighty Baby instrumental from the legendary ‘Glastonbury Fayre’ LP, plus two previously unreleased instrumentals from that period. With the resonant vocal of guitarist Hill fitting perfectly within the context of the shorter songs, this is a prime offering of the band’s work and a virtual collection in its own right – absolutely superb stuff... oh, and a special note for the spectacular packaging which is like ‘Sea shanties’ in a gatefold cover with a long-ship inside.

The full track list is as follows: ‘Open Season’ (new track) / ‘Unearthed’ / ‘Static In The Attic’ / ‘The ballad Of Norris Mill’ / ‘The Great Universal Confidence Trick’ / ‘Icarus Phoenix’ / ‘Unhinged’ / ‘All Of One Race’ / ‘Resonance’ / ‘Turn Yourself Down’ / ‘Light Your Torch’ / ‘Steady In E’ / ‘Garage Gods’ / ‘Spindle’ (new track).

WHERE WERE YOU LIVING A YEAR FROM NOW

STONER ROCK (PSYCH)

On same label as the excellent Orange Goblin comes this new kid on the stoner rock block, and it has to be said that it’s quite superb! With songs taken at a variety of paces, this is a fine exhibition of stoner with dynamics in the arrangements, and unusually, generally shouted vocals, that in the context of the grungy guitar riffs, searing solos and rock solid rhythms, works to perfection. To be fair, the vocals actually cover a greater range than that implies and they are given the appropriate degree of angst, venom and attack to make them palatable throughout. As stoner goes, this is more psychedelic than most, more varied in terms of its arrangements and dynamics, displays a greater quality of song-writing and is a thoroughly mighty album.

HAMMERED (LTD 2CD DIGI-PAK)

HEAVY ROCK (PSYCH)

Now ‘class’ is not the word that you think would come to mind when reviewing a Motorhead album, but sometimes, pure unadulterated power in its raw state, while pulverising, does not, a good listening album, make. So, lord knows how many albums later, why bother to review a Motorhead album at all – same old stuff, you probably think? No, there you’d be wrong - For this is wickedly heavy metal that is (shock, horror) produced, arranged and played to absolute perfection, and it is this care to that process that makes this the most listenable album they’ve done in years. It’s heavy metal that can doesn’t drive you to insanity and is full of driving tracks that are heavy yet palatable, letting the adrenaline flow without giving you a headache. The key here is the song-writing – Lemmy’s done a set of songs that are anthemic, even harmony-laden, full of hooks, riffs that most bands would kill for, with the whole band putting everything they’ve got into the delivery. With that in mind, lyrically more aware than you might think, and the awesome production, I can honestly say that if you’re a rock fan, never really fancied the idea of the band, but you want to own just one album by them, something that is heavy metal at its finest, then this is truly the best place to begin. For all their fans, just wallow in their finest album – possibly ever. Oh yes, if you’re quick enough you get a bonus CD featuring previews of their DVD, plus 3 exclusive tracks, 2 of which are live from 2001, and the only group-CD appearance of the World Wrestling Federation’s Triple H anthem: ‘The Game’. All in a neat foldout digi-pak too, this is value in rock that never came this good before.

COUP DE GRACE

STONER ROCK (PSYCH)

Jesus – it’s a stoner rock version of Motorhead! Yep, it’s the booze-soaked vocals, a whopping great bass, thrashing drums and guitar that’s fuzzed to the max, in a huge tidal wave of dirty riffing and searing soloing pouring forth onto the assembled masses. From start to finish, it’s one massive adrenaline rush of monstrous proportions, and rarely has stoner rock sounded so darned black. This band does have a certain dynamic quality in the arrangements, and that prevents it from sounding like a one-trick outfit. If you want to be pummelled mercilessly by your rock, be taken back to the seventies and spend nearly an hour being thoroughly angry, this one’s for you.

HIDDEN STEP (REMASTERED FROM ORIGINAL TAPES)

ACID ROCK INST. (PSYCH)

Remastered re-issue for an Ozrics album originally issued in the year 2000. The 7 tracks clock up a healthy forty-eight minutes worth of thunderous psych-rock, with big lead lines generated from spiralling synths, blazing electric guitars, psyched-up flute, expansive classical keyboard chords, sequencers, tight bass and crisp drumming. The album’s opener says it all as it goes into all-out attack and takes off to heights never before reached by this band. It just exudes class, quality and sheer power, and at its height the instruments play out a storm, yet never lose sight of construction, melody, heart and dynamics. This is psych / space-rock supreme - THE undoubted Ozrics classic crossover album, encompassing music for ‘Synth (T.Dream)’, Hawkwind, Gong fans and beyond – a work of great genius from one of the wonders of the modern psychedelic music world!

PONGMASTERS BALL-LIVE (2CD)

ACID ROCK INST. (PSYCH)

A lot of people reckon that the first live Ozrics CD cannot be bettered in terms of delivering the quintessential sound that is the band in full-on effect. Well, think again, because this is a two-hour concert from the touring band of 2001 that will blow your socks off! Even better is the way the concert starts, slowly and gradually building up steam and sounding very organic, then, the further in you get, the music slowly draws you into its simmering spell. Almost without noticing, you are completely caught up in the steaming cauldron of electric guitars, synths, bass and drums that is dominating the landscape, whirling dervish-style into to the searing strains of some of the best psychedelic acid-rock on the planet – and you’re only half way through disc 1! This CD ends with a most monumental version of the ‘Pyramidion’ single that can’t fail to have your feet moving to the rhythmic spell it casts. The 2nd disc is simply sensational, as storm-force versions of ‘Sploosh’ and ‘The Throbbe’ serve to testify. The sound quality is absolutely perfect, the band are on absolutely peak form, and as a testament that the Ozrics, far from having peaked as a working unit as some may have thought, are actually still in the ascendancy, this and the previous studio albums illustrate the point perfectly. 16 tracks of essential listening!
