SO MANY MINDS, SO LITTLE TIME

CLASSIC SPACE-ROCK (PSYCH)

USA band that made a tremendous debut album in the form of ‘25,000 Feet Per Second’. This one consists of rare, live and unreleased tracks, plus one from each of the other two albums. This one works by virtue of the fact that the material is really strong, varied and dynamic - A great set of songs and instrumentals, largely the latter, including a cracking, laid-back, space version of Can's ‘Future Days'. The album is packed full of great musicianship and is generally more identifiable throughout as 1970's-inspired space-rock with the guitars and Lemmy-like bass running wild over consistent drum rhythms and spiralling synth patterns. Overall, this is one excellent and thoroughly consistent album.

FAMILY BOX (3 HAWKWIND RELATED CD'S IN ONE PACK)

CLASSIC SPACE-ROCK (PSYCH)

These labels don’t make it easy for you, do they? Now read carefully, ‘coz this is tricky… Originally, and still currently, and just to confuse things even further; This neatly packaged item contains ‘Psychedelic Warlords’ (Hawkwind), ‘Prophets Of Time’ (Nik Turner) & ‘Solar Wind’ (Spiral Realms) plus a bonus CD that was a lucky dip, in that each box had any one of about 5 or 6 different albums as the bonus 4th disc, ranging from Calvert and The Brain to Steve Took and Ron Geesin. So, if you were lucky enough, you were getting four fantastic albums for your money. However, imagine our surprise when we found a stock order rolling in with two of the boxes containing the ‘Psychedelic Warlords’ album as the bonus disc, with the Spiral Realms ‘Trip To G9’ album and Nik Turner’s ‘Past Or Future’ replacing two of the original parts of the box. So, as things stand now, we can’t guarantee which albums will be in the box each time they come into stock, so it’s ‘pot-luck’ when you order this one! - Who knows, you might be lucky and get…?

LORD OF LIGHT (CLEOPATRA)

CLASSIC SPACE-ROCK (PSYCH)

This CD is an unusual compilation that is a perfect representation of Hawkwind’s music. It sums up all that is best, drawing from classic albums, and including material from the ‘Captain Lockheed’ album, plus the added bonus of an exclusive mix of a Nik Turner track which, in its original state, appeared on the ‘Sphynx’ CD.

PSYCHEDELIC WARLORDS

CLASSIC SPACE-ROCK (PSYCH)

The first, and in my opinion, still one of the finest, compilations of the classic 70’s EMI tracks on one CD. No fillers, no extras, just a full length CD full of totally classic timeless Hawkwind tracks. Lifted from the first LP, right up to the ‘Hall Of The Mountain Grill’ album it’s one stunning intro for anyone who has not heard the band yet (I know that would seem bizarre, but there must be some out there). Also, this is the compilation that, for me, sums up what the band are all about – Full on, driving space-rock, with high octane guitar riffs, searing solos, atmospheric synths, surging rhythms, superb vocals, a huge production, dynamics that make the quiet bits as enjoyable as the loud bits, and a level of song writing that, not only created the space-rock genre, but still remains to this day, the figurehead of what the it is all about.

WELCOME TO THE FUTURE (4CD SET-USA)

CLASSIC SPACE-ROCK (PSYCH)

If this wasn’t one of the most superb value-for-money Hawkwind sets before, it’s even more so now! The material on this four CD set is taken from four albums, two of which are absolutely required listening for any Hawkwind fan. Firstly, it’s the excellent, if slightly rustic, ‘Text Of Festival’ album, the only audio documentary of live music from the first album era. The second is the superb ‘Space Ritual 2’ album, recorded on the legendary ‘Space Ritual’ tour, but from different venues or with different tracks from the same venue that were not on the original double album. Both are from the classic early 70’s line-ups of the band. The other two discs are the iffy quality ‘live’ ‘Space Ritual’ tour era album ‘Yuri Gagarin’ and the ‘Masters Of The Universe’ album, which is actually the same as the ‘Text’ album, but clearly whoever put this together didn’t have a clue as to what on earth they were doing. So, you get two great albums, one ok one, and one waste of space for your money. So, why should this be any more of a required purchase now, when the albums themselves are all over the place? Answer: because the originals are now all well deleted, and this is your only, and possibly your last, chance to get them at a price that won’t break the bank. Many will have all or some already, but for those without the main two, then you really should get this before it’s too late.
