VIVA (INCL. A 25 MINUTE COVER OF FLOYD'S 'ECHOES')

SPACE-ROCK (PSYCH)

A fantastic 6 track / fifty-seven minute mix of space-rock, psychedelia and early 70’s prog in a mainly instrumental showcase that features some wicked electric guitars, special effects, synths, drums and samples. It’s a blending of laid-back and driving Hawkwind, early Pink Floyd with a few touches of progressive-rock, with a female vocalist that provides just the right accompaniment on the odd song part of the show. The album was recorded live at the Quarkstock Festival in June 2000 - It has all the energy and excitement of a ‘live’ show, plus it’s an excellent quality recording, so there should be no worries about that side of things. Raw & dynamic, this is essential space-rock for early 70’s Floyd and psych-rock fans!

AS ABOVE SO BELOW (ALAN DAVEY OF HAWKIND)

STYLE/LINK:HAWKWIND

Featuring Alan Davey on bass and vocals with Simon House on synths and violin this CD burns long and loud into the starry night sky! The force and power is all here as the House factor really makes its presence felt throughout. It’s a sacrilegious thing to say perhaps, but some of this album wouldn’t have sounded out of place on the old Hawkwind ‘Warrior On The Edge Of Time’ album, as songs, guitar work, synths and a steaming rhythm section really deliver the goods, taking no prisoners as it goes. The album opens with two storming songs, followed by a red-hot six-minute instrumental, then comes the title track, and that is pure, almost mid-70’s Hawkwind. The really incredible thing here is the musical maturity that the album displays throughout - one that will make many people who may be expecting nothing more than a watered-down Motorhead, to gasp in amazement at what they actually discover. Compared to recent (and we’re talking last studio output) Hawkwind, ‘As Above’ is a class above it, and in a league of its own – in short, this album will surprise and delight the hell out of you! If you thought it was going to be a good album, then believe me, you were wrong – it’s a GREAT one!

SKIES A CROSSED SKY

SPACE-ROCK (PSYCH)

This has to rate as one of the best CD's I've heard in this genre, and it is absolutely unique! There are a total of seventy-one glorious minutes to this album and every one of the 13 tracks played by this four-piece line-up is just a total wonder to behold. Phased soundscapes, cascading, sliding electric bass solid drums, vast synth backdrops and incredible electric guitar textures, feedback and loops fly and soar elegantly and to mind-expanding effect on electric panoramas that stretch for miles – And all that comes one of the best ever eight minute opening tracks ever! The music that follows is equally mind-blowing, working well at any volume, as ethereal or explosively powerful, the content and production are brilliant, and the playing & construction just perfect. This CD has got to be one of the best, most unique and rewarding guitar based music albums that I’ve ever heard. An album you will be playing for a long, long time to come. Every bit a true classic!

ICE RITUAL

STYLE/LINK:HAWKWIND

13 ‘live’ Hawkwind covers plus a bonus track from the now-deleted ‘Electric Dreams’ promo CD that previewed the new Dark Sun studio work! The nine tracks, including the studio one, feature Hawkwind’s Nik Turner on sax, and the live covers are played with energy, enthusiasm and they come with very good sound quality, as a set of classic tracks are given a new makeover. The guitar work throughout is excellent, and the band are on good form, with tracks including ‘Psychedelic Warlords’, ‘D-Rider’, ‘The Right Stuff’, ‘Masters Of The Universe’, ‘Assault And Battery’, ‘Golden Void Pt 2’, ‘Silver Machine’, ‘Brainstorm’, ‘Hassan I Sahba’, ‘Kadu Flyer’, ‘Sonic Attack’, ‘Watching The Grass Grow’ & ‘Utopia 84’. Overall, this comes well recommended, especially for Hawkwind fans!

TOMBOLLA (NEW 74 MINUTE STUDIO ALBUM)

CLASSIC (PSYCH)

Sorry about the language but... bloody hell!! I mean to say... like, wow!!! What an album!!!! After a long, long wait from the incredible space-rock classic that was ‘SJU’, came ‘Tombolla’, and I can honestly say I wasn’t expecting this, and once you get over the initial shock, it’s superb! The shock part is: for the first couple of tracks, they’ve recreated a space-rock version of early seventies Jefferson Airplane, and it is that feel of the psychedelic early 70’s that pervades one hell of a lot of this album. There are 13 tracks on the disc, the longest clocking in at eight minutes, and it’s a largely song-based album with smoking Kaukonen-esque lead guitar throughout. From multi-harmony, full-sounding, psych-rock journeys through occasionally eclectic, almost early Dead style tracks, the spirit of the West Coast is never far away. Yet the album has a modern freshness to it that prevents it from sounding like some stale retro-trip. There’s even a touch of Pink Fairies, Mahogany Rush and more in there, with some seriously tasty electric slide, searing lead guitar and huge-sounding arrangements. By the time you get to the seven minutes of Pink Floyd-oriented space-rock that is the early 70’s UK-influenced track 6, you really feel you have one hell of an album in your hands – And you’d be right, because within its sphere, this CD is well varied and creatively composed, with it’s wealth of riches decidedly song-based, and that part is also pulled off magnificently, while the production and playing are top notch too. So, overall, this is a real winner - A total surprise, but a 100% certified gem that you never through you’d hear from this band – Magical!

FINAL CALL (SYNTH ALBUM BY HAWKWIND MEMBER)

STYLE/LINK:HAWKWIND

An instrumental solo CD from long time Hawkwind member Alan Davey, and for ‘Final Call’ he has created 10 fantastic instrumental cosmic trips, mixing atmospheric space-synth music and throbbing sequencer driven rhythms, combining space and dynamics in equal proportions. Using banks of swooping synth layers/melodies, organ, bass, ad percussion for the chugging Hawkwind-esque space-rock flows, and dreamy keyboard textures with occasional choral effects worthy of 70’s Tangerine Dream for the more celestial sound paintings, Davey has created a gem of an album that is equally essential for space-rock and synth/electronic fans alike. With not a wasted moment on the entire set, it’s the kind of album you will find yourself playing in the dark at night as much as for deep feeling atmospheres during the day - A simply awesome fifty minutes worth of psych soaked, electronic-based music.
