TOMBOLLA (NEW 74 MINUTE STUDIO ALBUM)
CLASSIC (PSYCH)Sorry about the language but... bloody hell!! I mean to say... like, wow!!! What an album!!!! After a long, long wait from the incredible space-rock classic that was ‘SJU’, came ‘Tombolla’, and I can honestly say I wasn’t expecting this, and once you get over the initial shock, it’s superb! The shock part is: for the first couple of tracks, they’ve recreated a space-rock version of early seventies Jefferson Airplane, and it is that feel of the psychedelic early 70’s that pervades one hell of a lot of this album. There are 13 tracks on the disc, the longest clocking in at eight minutes, and it’s a largely song-based album with smoking Kaukonen-esque lead guitar throughout. From multi-harmony, full-sounding, psych-rock journeys through occasionally eclectic, almost early Dead style tracks, the spirit of the West Coast is never far away. Yet the album has a modern freshness to it that prevents it from sounding like some stale retro-trip. There’s even a touch of Pink Fairies, Mahogany Rush and more in there, with some seriously tasty electric slide, searing lead guitar and huge-sounding arrangements. By the time you get to the seven minutes of Pink Floyd-oriented space-rock that is the early 70’s UK-influenced track 6, you really feel you have one hell of an album in your hands – And you’d be right, because within its sphere, this CD is well varied and creatively composed, with it’s wealth of riches decidedly song-based, and that part is also pulled off magnificently, while the production and playing are top notch too. So, overall, this is a real winner - A total surprise, but a 100% certified gem that you never through you’d hear from this band – Magical!
