STONER ROCK (PSYCH)

Stoner rock in its purest form as that big solid glob of roaring riffing from dirty guitar and bass drowns you in its depths, as guitar solos scythe their way through the morass, often distant to enhance the whole seventies-meets-now feel of the thing. It’s stirring stuff, doesn’t disguise what it is, doesn’t try to experiment, does exactly what’s expected of it, and by the bong load, as vocals, drums, and that molten mesh of guitars and bass erupt through the airwaves, with Blue Cheer and Sabbath influences well in evidence.

BLACK NOISE (CANADIAN BAND-CLASSIC PROG)

STYLE/LINK:NASH THE SLASH

Now this is something very special! It is a space-rock prog album and it’s like no other space rock album you’ll ever hear. It’s basically a vehicle for superb songs that are sung clearly with great harmony vocals, conjuring a sense of timeless space and wistful atmospherics that makes you travel with the songs to the stars. I suppose it’s actually more sci-fi rock than space rock with tracks titled 'Phasers On Stun', 'Aldeberan', 'Hours', 'Black Noise' and more. The compositions themselves are beautifully structured, very dynamic and a mix of the progressive & the powerful. The lead instrumentalists consist of Cameron Hawkins' synth/piano plus Nash The Slash (a genius if ever there was one!!) on electric violins and mandolin, ably supported by Marty Dellar on drums, with Hawkins overdubbing the bass guitar parts. Instrumentally the themes are superb, the textures exquisite and the soaring synths, violin and stunning mandolin work all mix together in a variety of settings to create some of the best sci-fi songs and instrumental passages you’ll hear on any CD. If there were any justice this set of insistent and unforgettable compositions would be hailed as a long lost classic in space music circles. Sheer genius!

PLEASANT JOURNEY IN HEAVY TUNES

SPACE-ROCK (PSYCH)

Class stoner rock firmly in the old Black Sabbath vein, but with the added ingredients of more than a hint of early Mahogany Rush in there too. The tracks are all as solid as you’d expect, the riffs as bass, guitar, drums-fuelled as you’d hope, the vocals sung with a passion and sound that you feel really fits the music. The guitars storm and lead that thrust out of the morass, and they are just a wonder to behold. Full sounding, solid and powerful, this really is a great album, full of ace guitar work. Most of the tracks are taken at a sensible pace and produced to bring out the sound without losing any of the all-important atmospheric qualities, as this tight unit steamrollers through the airwaves. As stoner goes, this is another absolute gem, so you really can’t go wrong here.

HIGH FIVE

STONER ROCK (PSYCH)

Stoner territory and we’re back to those thickly textured booming riffs, hefty electric bass, rivers of dripping lead guitars and generally slow burning but massive sounding slices of killer stoner rock. What makes this CD a recommended one is in the way the bass is used, as much for its melodic as its bottom-heavy content. The songs range from stoner boogie in a very Pink Fairies manner to slower, sludgier affairs that drip and burn like tar from a stick. It’s all well produced and brilliantly delivered, complete with some great lead guitar work that erupts from the mix to produce some well-placed, but never overdone, lead breaks. As stoner goes, it’s not as mind numbing as most, yet all the right ingredients are there, making it one of the best of its kind, and therefore it comes highly recommended.

SPIRAL GALAXY

STYLE/LINK:HAWKWIND

Now this is good–very good! The first 4 tracks are ‘Spiral Galaxy’, ‘Forge Of Vulcan’, ‘Hall Of The Mountain Grill’ & ‘Kronoglide Skywise’, which should intrigue and delight you before you even put it on. But, musically, this is a really chilled-out, blissful, but solid sounding set of instrumental music with loads of flowing synth layers and some neat violin textures. The synths are the clear winners when it comes to musical space time, but the whole feel of the pieces is a good deal more organic than on the ‘Yasassim’ album with much more cohesion and flow as the tracks soar and glide. It’s just an album that you put on at any time of the day when you want something that’s going to provide the right amount of ambience and interest without being ‘wallpaper’ music at one end, or too symphonic at the other. Excellently produced and played, it’s highly recommended to ‘Synth’, ‘Space-Rock’ and ‘Ambient’ music fans alike.

RADIANT BLACK MIND (USA)

ACID ROCK INST. (PSYCH)

All–instrumental power trio of electric guitar, bass and drums, with a corking new album that will undoubtedly appeal to anyone into Spacious Minds (electric and without the vocals), Djam Karet, ‘Uncle Harry’ style Pink Fairies (the ‘live’ ultra long version) and similar guitar-based bands. With nearly all lengthy compositions, this music is so superb, thanks largely to its use of dynamics among the power, knowing when to build it up, when to slow it down, when to roar and when to rock – this is just a fantastic album!
